The Whats and Whys of Karval's Mountain Plover Festival
What you can expect:
- •Mingle with farmers, ranchers and others who choose to live in the community. Learn about their lifestyle.
•Enjoy homestyle food at every meal including a Saturday night chuckwagon dinner with Western Entertainment. Most meals are provided and prepared by community nonprofits.
•Make new friends on the bus.
•Learn about conservation practices and history of the area.
•Tour private land that would normally not be accessible: Four local ranches are on the Colorado Birding Trail and two landowners are former “Wildlife Landowner of the Year” winners.
Wildlife Enthusiasts will enjoy visiting the Karval Lake State Wildlife Area and watching many species of prairie wildlife in their natural habitat.
History Lovers can talk with third generation ranchers, the sons and daughters of the homesteaders, and walk the spring hunting grounds of the Native Americans.
Nature Lovers will find vistas that go on for miles without a sign of man’s footprint, and visit playas, groves, natural springs, man made lakes, and fallow fields.
The Mountain Plover finds the short grass prairie and fallow fields around the area to be excellent nesting grounds. They begin arriving in early April, and so should you!
Lodging options include home stays with local families, primitive camping or camping with electric hookups for motor homes.
The center of operations will be in the town of Karval. Once you arrive, we will take care of your transportation to all locations. Ride a big yellow bus and a hay wagon to birding sites, which completes the ambience of prairie hospitality.
